How to Get Less Meat on a Deli Sandwich

Some delis put way too much meat on their sandwiches.

Some people will say, “there’s no such thing as too much meat.” For me, I at least want to fit my mouth around it.

When you order your sandwich, you can ask for it “lite”, which is deli-speak for less meat. Some delis also use the term “half sandwich”, where they give you a full sandwich but only half the meat, other delis will just give you half the sandwich.

There are health benefits to a lite sandwich. Deli meats usually contain a lot of sodium, saturated fat and nitrates. The other benefit of lite sandwiches is the price. Because the meat is the most expensive part, you typically get a break when you order lite.

If you’re buying your own deli meats, look for labels like “healthy” which means the meat contains less fat and less sodium or “lean” meaning it contains less than 10% fat.

Sorry, but this one is a little lame and not really a secret. You should label it one of your “sarcastic secrets”.

You’re right, it’s not a huge secret… but I was pretty close to not posting anything today… I thought for people who aren’t in NY and don’t go to delis much, this is probably something they don’t know.

I’m hoping to get more contributors to help with writing so we can maintain daily updates and continue the kind of posts that you’re accustomed to, the ones that take a few hours to research, write and edit. It’s hard for me to do that every night when I finish my day job, so you will sometimes get these little secrets. If you know any good writers, send them my way!

Actually this was a “secret” of sorts for me. I don’t like a lot of meat on my sandwich either – it’s never occurred to me to ask for less and a price break on lunch is never a bad thing :). Thanks for the post!

I’d offer myself, but I really don’t have the time either. I still enjoy your blog though!

Wow, even I never put that much meat on my sandwich like in that picture. That’s just a heart attack waiting to happen.
